N. LaVerne Streight, 71, of Homosassa, Fla., formerly of Decatur, died Tuesday (Sept. 26, 1995) in Seven Rivers Community Hospital. Wilder-Fountains Funeral Home, Homosassa Springs, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

She married James W. Streight on Aug. 25, 1945. Surviving are her husband of 50 years, James; sons, Ronald of Niceville, Fla.; Timothy E. of Decatur; daughter, Peggy Osborn of Decatur; brothers, Wilbur and Ronnie Ward, both of Decatur; sisters, Dorma Oldfield and Goldie Tripp, both of Decatur; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Wayne, Jerry and Raymond Ward.


DECATUR - Goldie C. Tripp, 79, of Decatur died 6 AM Friday (Feb. 23, 1996) in Americana Healthcare Center, Decatur. Services will be 2:30 PM Monday in Brintlinger's Funeral Home with visitation one hour before services. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown.

Mrs. Tripp was born in Decatur on Aug. 12, 1916, the daughter of Luther C. and Caroline Zoe Sheets Ward. She married Gaylord Tripp on June 25, 1938. Surviving are her husband, Gaylord of Decatur; son, Gaylord R. Tripp Jr. of Urbana; sisters, Mrs. James (Dorma) Oldfield of Decatur; brothers, Wilbur Ward and wife Linna of Decatur; Ronnie Ward and wife JoAnn of Decatur. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, LaVerne Streight, and three brothers, Wayne, Jerry and Raymond.

Jimmy's note: Aunt Goldie died two years ago and it was sad. Now, with Uncle Gaylord passing away this year, I am truly glad I knew them both. As I was growing up, many a weekend or holiday would find me staying at Goldie and Gaylord's with Buddy. The first time that I saw my brother, when mom and dad brought him home was at Goldie and Gaylord's. I will always miss them.

Decatur -

Gaylord R. Tripp Sr., 80, of Decatur died 4:04 p.m. Friday (April 24, 1998) in St. Mary's Hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Brintlinger's Funeral Home with visitation 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown, with military rites by Macon County Honor Guard.

Mr. Tripp was born in Shelbyville on July 22, 1917, the son of Dewey and Retha Edwards Tripp. He was a World War II Navy veteran, retired in 1980 from Mueller Co. after working many years and was a member of DAV, Eagles Lodge, Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge 401. he married Goldie Cleo Ward in St. Charles, Mo. on June 25, 1938. She preceded him in death in 1996.

Surviving are his son, Gaylord R. Tripp Jr. of Urbana; brothers, Lloyd Tripp and wife Barbara, William Tripp and wife Sylvia and Don Tripp, all of Decatur; sister, Joyce Spring of Effingham; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister and one brother.


DECATUR - Norma Jean Carter, 70, of Decatur died 8:54 a.m. Saturday (March 6, 1999) in her home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Salem Baptist Church with visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Monday in Brintlinger's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Old Stonington Cemetery. Memorials: Salem Baptist Church or donor's choice.Mrs. Carter was born July 17, 1928, in Monticello, the daughter of Harrison S. Oldfield and Virena Moffett Oldfield. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and attended Salem Baptist Church. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Assumption and belonged to the Moose Lodge. She married Clifford L. Carter Sr. on January 11, 1986. Surviving are her husband; son, Richard O. McDaniel of Decatur; sisters, Jennie McDanel and husband Francis, Carolyn Morville and husband Roy Jr. and Janet Durbin and husband Tom, all of Decatur; brother, Roger D. Oldfield of Decatur; stepchildren, Clifford Carter Jr. and wife Beverly of Clearwater, FL; Susan Miller and husband George of Niantic. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Orvel McDaniel and Lyle Harbarger, brothers, James Oldfield Sr and Lyle 'Pete' Oldfield.

Decatur -

Leona M. Scherer, 93, of Decatur died 8 p.m. Monday (April 27, 1998) in her home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday in Holy Family Catholic Church. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in J.J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home with 6:45 p.m. vigil prayer service. Burial will be in Mount Gilead Cemetery. Memorials: Holy Family Catholic Church or Decatur Memorial Hospital Hospice.


Leona was born November 7, 1904, in Boody, the daughter of Walter A. and Thaleda Musch Moffett. She married Anthony T. Scherer on July 15, 1930. He preceded her in death February 26, 1982.


Surviving are her daughters, Marilyn Scherer of Decatur; Joyce and husband Dr. Martin Fundenberger of Lebanon, Indiana; Jacqueline and husband Wayne Davis of Logansport, Indiana; Beverly and husband Dr. Wendell Sargent of Streator; brother, LeRoy Moffett and wife Evelyn of Rantoul; daughter-in-law, Barbara Scherer-Rice of Homosassa, Florida; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Dr. Robert A. Scherer, and sisters, Gertrude Blanford, Virena Oldfield and Viola Moffett.


Leona was a loving wife, a devoted mother, a nurturing grandmother and great-grandmother. Her generous, caring spirit will be greatly missed and her memory lovingly cherished.


Jimmy's note: I will miss Aunt Leona very much. I can still see Aunt Leona and Uncle Tony coming over to my mom and dad's home during holidays. Uncle Tony would always stand on his head and Aunt Leona and the rest of us would just laugh. I remember her as my grandma's sister and she always treated me, Deb and the boys so well. Even in her later years she still could remember Deb and the boys' names. Truly a sweet lady.
